COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER

Reporting to the Deputy Director of Philanthropy and Marketing, the Communications Manager plays a central role in shaping how the public understands and connects with The Wildlands Conservancy’s mission, values, and impact. This position works independently and in close partnership with the executive and philanthropy teams, as well as preserve staff, to implement a coordinated communications strategy that strengthens brand visibility, builds public and donor affinity, and supports fundraising goals.
The Communications Manager oversees content across our website, social media channels, and digital communications; manages press and media outreach; and leads the creation of original stories and visual materials that reflect the scale and heart of our mission. This role collaborates with consultants to manage most, but not all, graphic design needs and execute digital marketing campaigns (e.g., PPC and paid social), and is responsible for ensuring quality, consistency, and strategic alignment across deliverables. The Communications Manager will regularly report results and insights to the Deputy Director of Philanthropy and Marketing and, as appropriate, to the Executive Team.

Unique opportunity to reside at the Pioneertown Mountains Preserve, a 25,000-acre nature preserve located 10 miles northwest of Yucca Valley, CA. The position entails performing land stewardship, public contact, maintenance, and habitat restoration.
A love of the outdoors, a basic knowledge of ecology, enjoyment of people, and the ability to hike up to three miles are necessary. The steward will be responsible for maintaining positive, professional relationships with local residents, community and conservation groups, and educational and business entities, while promoting the dual mission of TWC. The work is primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, and requires regular and punctual attendance, including weekend work.

Conduct outdoor education programs teaching children in multiple grade levels environmental, science-based and cultural programs. Topics include ecology, hydrology, biology, geology, geography, cultural history, scientific method, land stewardship, human impact, climate change, along with activities relating to the enjoyment of nature’s beauty. Responsible for providing a safe and interactive learning experience to school and youth groups, and activities and interpretive programs for families and public visitors. Additional responsibilities include interacting with visitors in the Ranger station and on the trail, providing both natural history and Preserve information, and assisting with weekend and public programming, including guided hikes and family programs. Bilingual English/ Spanish is preferred but not required.
